Our Medical Editorial Methodology
How we evaluate clinical evidence to provide safe, doctor-backed supplement recommendations.
At Wellness Sanctuary, we recognize that metabolic health advice carries significant responsibility. Our process is designed to filter out "marketing hype" and focus exclusively on physiologically sound, evidence-based data.
1. The Hierarchy of Evidence
We prioritize sources based on the gold standard of clinical research. Our recommendations follow this strict hierarchy:
- Level 1: Cochrane Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses of Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs).
- Level 2: Large-scale, peer-reviewed clinical trials published in high-impact journals (e.g., The Lancet, Nature Medicine, JAMA).
- Level 3: International clinical guidelines (e.g., International PCOS Guidelines, ADA Standards of Care).
A Note on Bioavailability
Many "Level 1" studies fail in practice because they use poorly absorbed compounds (like standard Berberine HCl). Our unique methodology combines clinical efficacy with pharmacokinetic analysis (how the body actually absorbs the molecule).
2. Fact-Checking & Primary Sources
Every claim regarding glucose reduction, GLP-1 stimulation, or hormonal balance is linked to a primary source (PubMed/NCBI). We do not rely on manufacturer-sponsored "white papers" unless they are corroborated by independent third-party research.
3. Conflict of Interest Disclosure
While this site uses affiliate links to remain sustainable, medical integrity comes first. If a product is highly rated but has a low safety profile or poor bioavailability, we will explicitly state it, regardless of the affiliate commission.
4. How to Read a Supplement Label Like a Physician
Most patients buy supplements based on the front of the bottle. As a doctor, I only look at the "Other Ingredients" section. This is where low-quality brands hide fillers that can trigger gut inflammation or block absorption.
The "Red Flag" Additives (What to Avoid):
- Titanium Dioxide: Used for whitening capsules. Recently banned in the EU as a potential carcinogen.
- Magnesium Stearate (Low Quality): A flow agent that can, in high doses, potentially interfere with the absorption of the active nutrient.
- Artificial Colors (FD&C Blue/Red): Linked to neuro-inflammation in sensitive individuals.
- Proprietary Blends: If a label says "Metabolic Blend" without listing the exact milligrams of each ingredient, do not buy it. It is a tactic used to hide "under-dosing" of expensive ingredients like Berberine or Inositol.
5. Advanced Safety Matrix: Drug Interactions
This matrix targets the high-risk interactions for metabolic patients.
| Supplement | Interacting Medication | Clinical Consequence | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Berberine | Statins (Atorvastatin, etc.) | Potential for increased statin levels in the blood, increasing risk of muscle pain (myopathy). | Monitor liver enzymes and muscle soreness closely. |
| Inositol | Lithium | Inositol can decrease the effectiveness of Lithium treatments. | Strict contraindication for patients on Lithium therapy. |
| Omega-3 | NSAIDS (Ibuprofen, Aspirin) | Both have anti-platelet effects. Increased risk of bruising or internal bleeding. | Limit Omega-3 to <2g/day if using daily NSAIDs. |
| Magnesium | Antibiotics (Quinolones/Tetracyclines) | Magnesium binds to the antibiotic, preventing its absorption and making the treatment fail. | Space intake by at least 4 hours. |
Primum Non Nocere (First, Do No Harm)
As a physician, my goal is not just to recommend what works, but to identify what is safe for your unique physiology. Metabolic supplements are powerful pharmacological tools. They can alter your blood chemistry significantly.
Before starting any protocol found on this site, you must answer three questions:
- Are you currently taking any prescription glucose-lowering medication?
- Are you pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the next 3 months?
- Do you have a history of chronic kidney or liver disease?
If the answer to any of these is 'Yes', a direct consultation with your local healthcare provider is mandatory before introducing these compounds.
